Many of the homeowners in Thurston County, Washington, who use a garage door opener for easy, safe and secure entry and exit to their garage and home have already found that access to their cars, as well as secure access in and out of their garages, are compromised by a powerless garage door opener when there is a power failure. Not only does this cause convenience and transportation issues, it also poses a security threat to homeowners and families who rely on the garage door as the primary entrance and exit from their home.

“Although the garage door is the largest and heaviest moving part in one’s home, the possibility of the garage door not opening during a power outage is usually the last of many things to cross a homeowner’s mind during a storm, even though it can pose the biggest inconvenience and security risk, ” states John McKinlay of Olympia Overhead Doors in Olympia, Washington.

As an authorized LiftMaster® garage door opener dealer, Olympia Overhead Doors is able to offer these customers a safe, practical and reliable access solution that can help them prepare for the next inevitable storm or any unforeseen outages throughout the year. LiftMaster openers equipped with a unique Battery Backup system can be professionally installed to provide area homeowners with peace-of-mind and added protection for the next power outage.

The Battery Backup Solution

LiftMaster openers with Battery Backup allow homeowners to enter and exit their garage when the power is out by supplying standby power for up to two days. Even after 24 hours of standby time (i.e. full-day power outage), the opener will still perform 20 full “up and down” cycles.

Once power is lost to the home, the Battery Backup system automatically begins functioning. Dedicated to full access and safety, the Battery Backup system on the LiftMaster garage door opener operates so all remote controls and garage door opener safety systems work normally. Also, to notify the homeowner that the garage door opener is operating under battery power, a series of recognizable, audible sounds signal when the door is opening or closing. As an added safety feature, a flashing LED light alerts the homeowner when the battery is charging, in use, or when the batteries need to be replaced. The battery, which has a life of roughly three-to-five years under normal use, is warranted for one year from the date of purchase to the original owner.

“While we hope we will never again be faced with power outages like we just experienced, we always recommend to homeowners and local builders a garage door opener with the Battery Backup system — an easy and reliable way to ensure

security, safety and convenience as well as peace-of-mind during a power outage,” continued John McKinlay

Professional Installation and Service

All LiftMaster garage door openers, accessories and access systems are professionally installed by LiftMaster authorized dealers, such as Olympia Overhead Doors.. To learn more about equipping your home or multi-unit residence with a LiftMaster garage door opener with Battery Backup, please contact Olympia Overhead Doors at 360-491-8003 or visit www.LiftMaster.com.

The simple way to use it safely is to simply connect an extension cord to the generator and then connect the freezer or refigerator to the cord. Obviously this has a lot of limitations and will not work for your furnace or other permanently connected electrical appliances. To run these larger appliances you need to have a transfer switch installed. This is usually not a good thing for a homeowner to do – hire a professional so it is done correctly and to code.

Don’t connect the generator directly to your home’s wiring. Have a qualified electrician connect the generator with a transfer switch so that it is not connected directly to your home wiring. If not installed properly, generators can feed electricity back into power lines that are connected to your home, and pose a deadly situation for electric utility workers in the area.

Don’t overload the generator. Do not operate more appliances and equipment than the generator can handle, as overloading your generator can seriously damage your appliances and electronics. A portable electric generator should be used only when necessary, and only to power essential equipment.

Never use a generator indoors or in an attached garage. Also, never use a generator in basements, crawl spaces, or other enclosed or partially enclosed areas, even when they are ventilated. Locate the unit far from doors, windows, and vents that could allow the carbon monoxide emitted by a generator to come indoors. Carbon monoxide can be deadly.

Turn off all equipment powered by the generator before shutting down your generator.

Always turn the generator off and let it cool down before refueling it.

Keep children and pets away from electric generators at all times.

Use the proper power cords. Only use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated power cords with an adequate wire gauge. Overloaded cords can cause fires or equipment damage. Never use extension cords with exposed wires or worn shielding. Make sure the cords from the generator don’t present a tripping hazard and protect the cords from getting pinched or crushed if they pass through a window or doorway.

Prevent electrical shock — make sure your generator is properly grounded. Your manufacturer’s manual contains the correct grounding procedures. Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation.

Always remember to turn off the generator while you sleep and when you are away from home to avoid a possible fire hazard.

Imagine you’re a woman and you have cancer. Not only is that word just about the scariest thing you can hear, but what about everything else? What about your family? Who will take care of them? Who will feed them and clean for them while you are going through your treatments? Well hopefully you have family that can help you out – it’s exhausting. But most women don’t receive the amount of sustained help that is really necessary.

This additional hardship is why Cleaning For a Reason was created. The founder, Debbie Sardone owned a cleaning company in Texas – Buckets and Bows. She saw the additional struggle that many women have and the additional burden those women take on simply from their desire to care for their families, even during their own treatments. Cleaning For a Reason is a non-profit organization of residential house cleaning companies. We donate monthly cleanings to help with that burden.

As the owner of American Maid I’ve been a supporter of C4R since its inception. We are Charter members and count ourselves lucky to have this opportunity. My Grandmother died from breast cancer and I’ve been affected through other close relationships as well. It isn’t always a great experience unfortunately. More than once we’ve gotten to know someone only to have them pass away abruptly. But the benefits outweigh the drawbacks for sure! Everyone in the company gets energized just from seeing a C4R patient on the schedule. There aren’t that many things we do as professional housekeepers that have as much an impact on our Clients’ lives. We get the most glowing thank yous and hugs – at the end of the day we don’t go home thinking “yep, I cleaned another toilet” instead we’re thinking “yep, I helped one more woman have at least a little bit of peace.” You can’t buy feelings like that J We only wish we could do more!

Please take a moment to visit www.cleaningforareason.org if you feel you’d like to help out with this cause or if you know someone in need. The approval process is very easy and is done very quickly also.

In 1928 George Eklund laid the foundation for Lew Rents by purchasing The Olympia Hardware Co. in downtown Olympia. The store’s longevity and outstanding customer service began and continued from that time forward.

George ran the hardware store in Downtown Olympia until 1956. He was ready to retire and his son, Lew, was ready to take over the family business with fresh new ideas for expansion to the historic Olympia Hardware Co. Olympia was growing quickly and Lew decided that it was time to grow with it. His ideas were put in place and Olympia had its very first tool rental company. Under Lew’s ownership, Olympia Hardware Co. was a place you could buy tools and hardware as well as rent tools.

The idea took off, local contractors and homeowners loved the idea of renting tools. Instead of having to purchase all the tools they needed, they could rent what they needed for a specific job. Lew decided that it was working out so well that the family’s future wasn’t in hardware, it was in rental. In 1961 Lew moved the business to a new location on East Fourth Avenue and changed the name to Lew Rents.

In the later part of the 60′s interest on the part of Lew’s youngest children, Dale and Dean, started to grow. The two started out in the service shop and worked their way to the front counter learning the ins and outs of the family business. In the 70′s Dale decided to go to college at WSU and earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Dean stayed and continued to work alongside Lew. After completing college and working for a short time in California, Dale returned to Olympia and once again worked alongside his father. In the later part of 1977 Lew and his wife Geraldine retired and the boys took over Lew Rents.

With the third generation Lew Rents would once again evolve. In 1980 Lew Rents expanded to a second location in West Olympia. The demand for tool rentals was increasing and one store could no longer fill the needs of their customers. The two brothers found a building on Harrison Avenue and opened Lew Rents West. Dale ran the West side store and Dean continued to run the East side store. The new West Olympia location suited their needs for about 6 years until; once again, they needed to expand. In 1987 they completed construction of a new building and Lew Rents West was moved to, what was then, the corner of Mud Bay and McPhee roads (today it’s Harrison Avenue and McPhee Rd). Lew Rents West was able to expand enough with this new location to finally fully meet the needs of their customers.

Today, 84 years later, both stores are still open and serving customers every day. The stores continue to work closely with one another as the fourth generation of Eklund’s are working hard to continue their great grandfather’s legacy. At this time two of Dale’s children, Jason and Jessica, work alongside him at Lew Rents West while Deans son Jamie works alongside him at Lew Rents on the East side.

Lew Rents has certainly come a long way and continues to grow with every passing year. This year, 2012, Lew Rents West became an Authorized Husqvarna Dealer. Mixing a little bit of the hardware store back into the rental business and growing with their customers. With each passing year the Eklund family looks for new ways to provide exceptional products and customer service to the people of the Puget Sound.

Dale and Dean feel that the secret to staying in business generation after generation involves not only family but also hiring the right kind of people. They, as their father before them, emphasize on strong customer service as well as family participation. With four generations and eighty plus years in business, Lew Rents has a vast selection of tools and equipment to fit every customer’s needs and the knowledge to give you the answers you’re looking for!
