Tumwater 4th of July Celebration
Tumwater 4th of July Celebration
By Pete Kmet
This year marks the 26th Annual Tumwater Independence Day Parade, and I am proud to announce that we will also be hosting our 13th Annual Artesian Festival and Thunder Valley Fireworks Show. As the Tumwater community continues to grow and experience changes, we are pleased to offer outstanding community events such as these. Citywide events bring us together to share the enjoyment of our city and improve our quality of life.
As is our tradition, this 4th of July will be a day of great celebration in Tumwater. Our festivities kick off at 10:45am with the Pre-Parade. The Tumwater Independence Day Parade starts at 11am. This year’s theme is “Stars, Stripes & Service” with 17th Fires Brigade led by Colonel Ken Kamper, as Grand Marshal! Our parade is always a crowd-pleasing event with a wide variety of entries ranging from horses and dance teams to classic cars and trucks. The parade starts at the corner of Capitol Blvd. and Lee Street and ends just past City Hall on Israel Road. Come out early to get your optimum parade viewing seat!
The Tumwater Artesian Festival and the Thunder Valley Fireworks Show are once again being sponsored by the Tumwater Downtown Association (TDA). Many of our local businesses realize the importance of this event and are committed to ensuring that it continues to be a Tumwater tradition. Through their fundraising efforts, the TDA is able to provide the city with the financial resources to hold this festival. Their hard work and dedication to this event proves the great sense of community pride that we all share and which makes our city great. The business members of the TDA deserve our gratitude and have our continued support for many more fireworks shows to come.
At 6:00pm, we’ll kick off the Tumwater Artesian Festival at Tumwater Valley. Thanks to the efforts of City staff, the TDA, OBee Credit Union, ROXY 94.5FM, MIXX 96.1, United Rentals, Olympia Federal Savings, Tumwater Liquor & Wine, Hanson Motors and many other local businesses, this is sure to be our biggest and best event yet. Our local business community has provided more support for this event than ever before. Without their sponsorship, this family oriented festival would not be possible.
Entry into the event is free and the entrance is through the north gate of the golf course driving range. Event parking is located off of “E” Street, in the parking lot of the former Olympia Brewery. The cost for parking is $10 per vehicle. The money collected will be used by the Tumwater Downtown Association for our 2014 fireworks display and to support local youth organizations. There will be food vendors, music, and activities for the whole family. For the kids, Jeff Evans will perform his magic, Rhys Thomas will perform his JuggleMania show, the Hands On Children’s Museum will paint faces, and Balloon Man – John London will shape unique balloon surprises. There will also be multiple activity areas for kids and families, including slides, obstacle courses, bouncers, and even a climbing wall. We will also offer a variety of exciting activities for teens in the “Teen Zone.” Once again this year, the very popular and exciting Kapowsin 4th of July Sky Divers will be landing at the Artesian Festival at 8:45pm. New for 2013 Artesian Festival we have added a zip-line to the event, sponsored by Northstar Church.
As darkness approaches, the lights will dim and the Old Brewery Whistle will blow, once again, in the Tumwater Valley, signaling the start of the Thunder Valley Fireworks show. Always the best around, this year’s fireworks are guaranteed to be the biggest and best yet!!
We look forward to spending the day with you on the 4th of July and hope you enjoy all that Tumwater has to offer!
