Tumwater’s 13th Annual “SCREEN ON THE GREEN”, by: Marisa Worden | Recreation Marketing Specialist, City of Tumwater Parks & Recreation
Looking for some free summer activities for the whole family? How about having your family movie night under the stars for a change? If that sounds like your idea of fun, then Tumwater Parks and Recreation’s Screen on the Green movie series is for you!
It’s no secret that everyone in the Pacific Northwest looks forward to the arrival of summer, which brings warmer weather and a chance to get outside and enjoy the great community that we live in. It’s a busy couple of months that we look forward to all year long! Summer is a busy time at Tumwater Parks and Recreation as well. Almost any day or time during the week you can hear the gentle sound of golf clubs swinging through the air and golf balls sailing down the fairway at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course. But on Friday nights in August you’ll hear different sounds: the sounds of the cinema.
For the 13th year in a row, Tumwater Parks and Recreation is bringing its outdoor movie series, Screen on the Green, to the Tumwater Valley Golf Course. Unique in its private, verdant setting and the inflatable “Blimpscreen,” Tumwater’s Screen on the Green can easily be labeled an ‘awesome’ experience. The 18’x 24’ movie screen is set up at the “first tee.” (For all non-golfers, that’s the grassy area where golfers tee up for the first hole of their golf round.) The screen sits in an inflatable frame that allows the movie to be viewed from anywhere on the first tee. Especially if you’re not familiar with Blimpscreens, you are sure to be impressed. Not only is the picture quality superb, but the sound system is sure to blow you away. This year’s series starts with “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (PG-13) on August 3. The following Friday movies are “Peter Rabbit” (PG) on August 10, “A Wrinkle in Time” (PG) on August 17, and “Wonder Woman” (PG-13) on August 24. Seating for all movie nights begins at 7:30pm. Movies begin at dusk.
As always, moviegoers are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy dinner at the River’s Edge Restaurant or bring their own picnic. New this year – an on-site food truck! Each Friday, Wicked Pies will be serving up New York style wood-fired pizza, salads, sweets, and drinks! Tumwater Parks and Recreation is excited to have Wicked Pies on board and to offer a new dinner option to attendees.
This great community event is made possible by 2018 Series Sponsor Toyota of Olympia as well as individual movie sponsors: Lacey, Capital & Chehalis Collision Centers; Puget Sound Energy; McLain/Kerby State Farm Agency; and WSECU.
So bring your family, some blankets, and maybe a lawn chair or two down to the Green on Friday nights in August and see for yourself how unique this experience is.
